Do you consider yourself a creative person? For some, getting one’s creative juices flowing is easy; it comes natural, and ideas seem to spring forward as soon as a brainstorm begins. For others, it isn’t quite that simple, and can be downright challenging to find the inspiration to come up with fresh, unique concepts.
Creativity is often conveyed as something you’re either born with or you aren’t. But we don’t believe that; many researchers that believe that creativity is simply a skill that needs to be practiced, or a muscle that needs to be exercised. Like math, writing, or even talking friends through their problems, practice makes perfect when it comes to exercising your creativity.
Need some inspiration? We have a few ideas to get you started on the path to creative exploration.
Be open to grabbing ideas from others. Sometimes you’re just stuck in a rut, and need a fresh pair of eyes to enhance your creativity. Embrace even those ideas that you aren’t so fond of, or that you don’t think will work for you. Writing them all down and brainstorming from that list could work wonders in coming up with your own new idea. Enlist in the help of others…. it may not help right away, but in the long run, you’ll always move forward!
Keep asking questions
Start with your original question, or the problem you’re trying to solve creatively. What are you trying to accomplish? From there, ask smaller, more targeted questions that also get at your goal. Then, ask bigger picture questions that get at why you’re trying to be more creative in the first place. And even in your life more generally, always be curious – the answer your friend gives to a completely unrelated question about her life may be the inspiration you need!
Write new ideas on a daily basis
Some of the best thinkers, inventors, and entrepreneurs spend a few minutes each day brainstorming new ideas. Not just about one particular project, but about everything. Take a few minutes during your idle time, whether that’s during your morning coffee or right before bed at night, to brainstorm: new recipe ideas, work ideas, ideas for your family. Just like with almost all things, the more practice you get, the better you’ll become.
Find your “idea generator”
People are inspired by different things. While one of your colleagues or friends may find their best ideas while meditating, that simply may not be for you. Find your “idea generator”; for some, it’s a great art museum; for others, exercise; and others, enjoying nature. Find what inspires you, and do it often.
Immerse yourself in something new
Some of the best ideas come from trying new things. Travel somewhere new, try a new sport, or head out on a new adventure with friends. These unique experiences are what keep our minds fresh and exuberant, so make a point to not get stuck in the same old routine.
