We’ve suddenly found ourselves at the great transition between summer and fall – when corn is still delicious but apples are, too. September is a wonderful month because we still get to enjoy the beautiful, crisp flavors of summer produce like greens, corn, and berries, but also notice our farmers markets starting to fill with the likes of squash, Brussels sprouts, heartier greens, and a wide variety of potatoes.
When produce is at its peak, it inevitably tastes better due to how fresh it is. Our favorite September fruits include apples, cherries, persimmons, and pears. These crisp, crunchy, filling fall favorites add a little bit of sweet flair to all your favorite recipes. While delicious raw, each of these juicy fruits can also be cooked into magnificence. And they don’t only need to be relegated to pies – apples and pears are actually great thrown on the grill, on top of a pizza, or in a quinoa dish.
Veggies galore emerge in September, and we couldn’t be more excited. Hearty fall wonders like potatoes (particularly sweet potatoes) help keep us full the whole day through. Cooking flavor into your favorite dishes takes on a whole new meaning in the fall, when garlic, onions, shallots, and leeks are in season. At their prime, these vegetables are literally wonderful in any meal. Throw onions, shallots, and garlic in your pan as the base for any of your favorite dishes, and watch as the flavor steps up a whole new level.
We couldn’t forget about our other favorite fall veggies: cauliflower, cabbage, carrots, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and mushrooms. You’ll notice a trend here: all of these yummy veggies are delicious roasted, and take on an amazing flavor when you add a touch of your favorite spices. They’re all also a hearty addition to any fall meal, keeping you fuller, longer, and allowing you to feel warm as the weather gets colder.
We’ve found a few great recipes across the web that use 5 of our favorite September produce items: apples, carrots, sweet potatoes, cauliflower, and cherries. Try out these recipes from some of our favorite food bloggers, and enjoy the September air while its still here!
